What does National Women’s Political Caucus do for Members?

Influences public policy on behalf of its members by maintaining a presence in Washington DC and advocating on issues of importance to women.
NWPC is extremely active in women's coalitions and organizations in DC that work together on legislative initiatives and political appointments.
For example, the Paycheck Fairness Bill is currently a focus.  This legislation quickly passed the House this session; it is now in the Senate.  NWPC has been an active part of the Paycheck Fairness Coalition.  We have met with Senators to encourage their support and co-sponsorship of the bill.  Because of our meetings, there are now 32 of the 35 Co-sponsorships necessary to bring the legislation up before the senate.
National is actively involved with the Women’s Appointment Coalition headed by former president of NWPC, Irene Natividad.  As a part of this coalition, we met with WH personnel to advocate and educate the Administration on the appointment of qualified senior appointments. In addition we are working to recruit qualified women to serve in the Administration.

Distributes timely information about current national issues

National sends our members email on current national issues that impact women. For example, National sent out alerts on the ‘Paycheck Fairness Act’ asking our members to contact their Senators to advocate for their support of this legislation.  We included talking points on the issue as well as contact info for each state’s Senators who had not already signed on to the bill. In addition, this issue was a focus of our March newsletter.  When the Paycheck Fairness Coalition realized that North Carolina Senator Kay Hagan had hesitations about the bill, our local NWPC North Carolina Caucus went into action and personally contacted her local office to advocate for support of this legislation.

e-newsletters and email communication

National sends out a bi-monthly newsletter that includes a ‘President’s message’; articles on events and issues at the forefront of national attention; focus on Member of the Month; and noteworthy activities of our state caucuses.  Paycheck Fairness was addressed in our January issue.  The appointment of women to Senior Level Appointments in the new Administration has been the focus of more than one newsletter.

Educates its members about the political process and how campaigns work through its campaign skills workshops and by providing practical experience in politics.
Our campaign materials are top notch and are available for purchase by members or chapters on the website. These materials are used by many chapters to offer great training for women candidates across the country.  Our new VP for Education and Training, Deanna Dawson, will put an emphasis on using technology to deliver these materials to even more members and candidates.

NWPC connects its members with important women elected officials and to promising women interested in running for office at the National level.

Our members meet women of influence and elected officials at our annual meetings and conventions and our President's Circle members "meet" these interesting women via scheduled conference calls.

Endorses and supports federal candidates to grow the body of progressive, pro-choice women in Congress and statewide offices.

In the 2008 general election, the NWPC endorsed and put their full efforts behind 25 candidates: 1 gubernatorial candidate; 2 senatorial candidates; and 22 congressional candidates.  Bev Perdue won her race for governor in North Carolina with a 12% gender gap.  Kay Hagen won the senate race in North Carolina with the same 12% gender gap and Jeanne Shaheen won her New Hampshire senate seat with an overwhelming 17% gender gap.  Six of our endorsed congressional candidates were victorious – Chellie Pingree, ME-1; Dina Titus, NV-3; Betsy Markey, CO-4; Suzanne Kosmas, FL-24; Mary Jo Kilroy, OH-15 and Ann Kirkpatrick, AZ-1.  In 2007 special election, National worked well with the MA Caucus to help elect Niki Tsongas to Congress with a $1000.00 contribution.

Provides positive press for women running for public office as well as issues important to women through positive press for the NWPC.
The NWPC President, Lulu Flores, has significantly elevated the positive media profile for the NWPC.   She has been interviewed by several media outlets including Dallas Morning News, BBC, The Hill, and POLITICO during the 2008 election cycle, Lulu served as a political panelist for CNN in Texas.  Our Executive Director was a focus in the September issue of Redbook which featured women candidate running in the 2008 elections.
When it really counted, NWPC was front and center to defend the barrage of sexist attacks on Hillary Clinton during the 2008 presidential election. In late January, NWPC organized a group of young women to protest Chris Matthews’ blatant sexism against Hillary Clinton and other women candidates outside NBC studios in Washington, DC braving the sleet and snow.  Twenty minutes after our protest, on his nightly ‘Hardball’ show, Chris Matthews apologized on his sexist comments about Ms. Clinton.  As a result of this rally, NWPC received excellent media coverage including a prominent spot in the Washington Post, Huffington Post, The Nation, several women’s blogs, ABC, and 2 local TV stations.
